A quick intro to RSS

If you haven’t a clue what RSS is all about, then this post is for you.

In a nutshell, RSS is a way of keeping up-to-date with the content of any webpage that provides an RSS feed. Think of it as the internet equivalent of a magazine subscription.

So how do you use an RSS feed?

The first thing to do is to decide which reader application you’re going to use. There are lots to choose from. Here are some links for some online readers:

(These links won’t subscribe you to a feed, they’ll just take you to their site)

There are also plenty of readers that you can install onto your computer if you prefer, but the online variety have the distinct advantage that you can get at them from anywhere you happen to have internet access at the time.

Personally, I use Google Reader. I find it fast and easy to read. Here’s what my RSS feed looks like from it:

On the left hand side, you’ve got a list of RSS subscriptions, on the right is the reading area. As soon as a website creates a new article, it appears in the subscription panel on the left to show you that there are unread articles.

To subscribe to my RSS, all you have to do is sign up for an account at the reader of your choice and click on the RSS feed icon on the right hand menu bar of this page. It’ll then give you a choice of which reader to add the feed to. Make your choice, and you’re done. It’s that easy!

RSS is there to make your life easier. No more digging through your bookmarks to visit websites, they come to you instead.
